Dogs of War

This magazine cover, from December of 1917, may need a little explanation.

The dogs represent countries — an English Toy Spaniel, a French Barbette (a type of poodle-like Water Spaniel), a Russian Borzoi, and a German Dachshund. The white dog is an American Pit Bull with a red-white-and-blue ribbon. I think the young man — lifting the German Dachshund out of harm’s way — represents “the pacifist” in the captioned title.
