This Barred Owl was dead on the tow path, with no obvious cause. Poison? Train impact (a train track was just 100 feet away)? Eagle fight?
The head was pretty gone, but that might be due to predation by fox or raccoon.
A vulture landed while I was flipping over the carcass. One critter’s death is another’s windfall.
One winner this day was a Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus tomentosus) that fell off the hawk corpse and scurried into the brush.
