Thank You Poland and Romania

Poland and Romania have made an exemption for Ukrainian’s who are forced to evacuate with their dogs and cats. There is a designated gate; your pets CAN cross without a passport as part of the evacuation exemption. Help is available at the border — don’t leave your dogs and cats behind.

Poland has simply thrown open its borders to Ukrainian refugees. NO ID needed, no vaccinations, no documents, pets welcomed. Over one million people are anticipated in rest centers.

Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova are said to be following suit.

This is excellent news. I'd heard and read early reports that people weren't evacuating Ukraine because they had pets. As we saw during Katrina, many people won't leave their beloved animals behind. It's also a huge problem in getting victims of domestic violence in the US to a safe shelter. Most do not allow pets. I've personally known and helped women stash their pets while they flee domestic abuse. I would never leave my companion animal behind, either. We stay together. The laws need to change: allow companion animals to evacuate with their people. My state has done this already, thankfully. (and following the tragedy of Katrina)
