Great Moments in Branding


I can hardly wait too see what marketing moron was consulted (and what they were paid!) to come up with the new name of the Washington, D.C. football team.

The Washington “Commanders” instantly became the Washington Commies playing at W.C. Fields.


There were, of course, many other options, including the Washington Redtails, which would have played homage to the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group, who painted the tails of their P-47s red, as well as a charismatic local bird of prey. And then there was this:


But no, the Redskins — the last NFL team to integrate in 1962 —went with a name that brought with it the long shadow of white supremacy. Wonderful! 🤦‍♂️





And yes, George Lincoln Rockwell’s headquarters was local, in Arlington, Virginia.

  1. Only if football makes someone think automatically of Nazis, in which case they may have larger problems in navigating the year 2022.
