Rabid Groundhog Found at Maryland Zoo

A wild and rabid groundhog
was found at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. The groundhog was not part of the zoo's animal collection, and was captured by staff in the "Maryland Wilderness" section of the zoo, and it tested positive for rabies. The animal was euthanized.

I wrote a piece about digging on the dogs in a land full of rabies back in 2011.

To tell the truth, I do not worry too much about rabies. The dogs are vaccinated, and I am pretty careful and fairly experienced handling wildlife.  That said, accident can happen, and have. Be careful out there. Don't drink and drive.

  1. There was a case of rabies in a horse in North Carolina earlier this month: http://www.tryondailybulletin.com/2017/08/10/positive-equine-case-of-rabies-identified-in-polk-county/ I knew it was possible, but it still seems odd.
