Industrial egg production, like you see here, invests quite a lot in keeping birds healthy and clean as the slightest inattention to detail costs money and time.
Back in 2015, I reviewed what Temple Grandin says a chicken wants. Chickens prefer a roof over their head, dim light to strong light, and will pay quite a lot (in terms of pecks) to have a little privacy screen (a piece of cloth) when they lay an egg.
More and more colony housing, and highly mechanical cage-free housing, is being installed -- it does not cost much when done on a massive scale, and it's good business, costing only about 1.5 cents more per egg produced (less than 20 cents per carton).
