This picture shows the entrance to a rendering plant on Narrows Road, Chillicothe, Ohio, probably about 1910. The automobile is towing a wagon, and inside that wagon is the mule who was, no doubt, previously pulling the wagon. If there is a better picture showing the replacement of horses and mules by engines, I have not seen it. Of course, it was the rise of the tractor that led to the massive marketing of canned horse and mule as dog food.
I think maybe this picture was posed. If the car & wagon were moving the wheel-spokes would have been blurred. And the big black dog has had the time to choose under the wagon as a shady spot to recline. Doesn't affect its probable vintage, or the fact that it's a cool picture.
