When I dig on the dogs, I am almost always surrounded by luxuriant poison ivy vines. I am fairly resistant to poison ivy (the dogs are entirely immune), but the real trick to avoiding hives is old-fashioned bar soap and a serious scrub with a washcloth. It works!

The Trick to Avoiding Poison Ivy
When I dig on the dogs, I am almost always surrounded by luxuriant poison ivy vines. I am fairly resistant to poison ivy (the dogs are entirely immune), but the real trick to avoiding hives is old-fashioned bar soap and a serious scrub with a washcloth. It works!

I'm not a scientist, but I have spent a lot of time in the woods, all over the US. I learned the lessons in the above video long ago, and can attest to their effectiveness. The only thing I might add to his advice would be to never use hot water while cleaning off the oils. The warmth of the water will open up the pores in the skin, as well as thin out the oils and make them flow into those pores. Cold water only.

Tecnu is good stuff, and I believe there's some in the above video. But in a pinch, any waterless hand cleaner, like Go-Jo, will remove the oils. I haven't compared the ingredient labels of both products, but I doubt there is much difference.
