A few weeks ago, a dog won Crufts, the biggest dog show on earth.
Who cares?
Not many any more. The era of dog shows has passed and is fading fast. I barely noted the show this year.
Which is not to say that there are those still trying to gin up controversy.
Last year, it was the dog that was poisoned by some animal rights lunatic or perhaps a competitor... and never mind if it turned out to have been poisoned close to home, in another country, by left over ant poison put out to kill foxes.
And remember the "cruelty" of the overweight handler who benched a Scottie by cupping it under the chin with one hand and lifting with the base of the tail at the other. Oh the horror! Except that terriers are handled like this all the time and they themselves could care less.
Then there were the PETA activist dressed as Klansmen, the PETA streakers, the obedience dog winner that bit a bystander, the dog that was left in a hot car in the parking lot, the agility dog that took a poop in the middle of its run, and ongoing questions about the health of the Dogue de Bordeaux, German Shepherd, Basset Hound, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese .... and on it goes.
This year, a West Highland White terrier that has never seen dirt, much less worked a fox, won. "Burneze Geordie Girl" beats six other best in breed winners to clinch the top prize.
And all of it was a big yawn.
