Red Tails

On Facebook, Frans de Waal posted the top picture, taken by photographer Anni Kasper near Rancho Seco, in California, of a Red-tailed Hawk carrying away a Pacific Gopher snake.

Also on Facebook the folks at The Naturalist's Notebook posted this picture, taken by photographer Ken Rohling, of a leucistic, Red-Tailed Hawk. Amazing!

  1. There have been several leucistic Red Tails reported (and photographed) in my corner of the USA lately. It could I suppose be one bird getting around, but if so he's well traveled. These birds are mostly white, with only the red-orange of the tail making it obvious what they are.
