This is the young Marion Robert Morrison, with his Airedale, Duke. He later embraced the dog's name as his own nickname, while changing his legal name to John Wayne.
Though touted as a silver screen icon, in reality life Duke Morrison was a right-wing racist, homophobic, draft-dodger who, as president of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, ruined many other careers by being a cheer-leader for black-listing.
