It's a bad black and tan, but where a black and tan starts and a Patterdale stops I will let other people debate in an endless round-robin of feigned expertise.
All I can say with certainty is that I wrote the first early history of the breed, noting that they derived from border terrier stock owned by Joe Bowman (see >http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com/2006/12/joe-bowmans-patterdale.html). Those primitive borders (see >> http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com/2009/12/what-flint-can-tell-us-about-working.html) were crossed with black and tan and Fell (colored terrier) stock stock and it was pretty uneven up to and continuing to this day. At some point it's all label-hanging and show ring rosette chasing. Call them what you will -- can they fit in the hole, will they enter the hole, and will they stay? All else is theory.
