Will the world end in fire or ice? Or will it simply wobble on, as it always has, sometimes getting hotter, and sometimes, getting cooler?
No one knows for sure, but there's no shortage of speculations.
The latest speculation is that a 60 percent drop in solar flare activity between 2030 and 2040 will create a new "Maunder Minimum" or mini ice age of the type that plunged the northern hemisphere into a series of particularly cold winters between 1645 and 1715, when the entire River Thames froze over in England.
