Better than today, but still not good enough. I mean, at least they still looked like dogs back then. The bull terrier's muzzle wasn't as down-turned, the fox terriers' backs were not quite as short, the Scotties' fur was not quite as fringed, and so on. So that's good. But they were still being inbred for looks, and not being allowed to have their form follow their function. Their great-great-great-grandchildren today are worse off for it, but it's still the same dysfunctional system.
