Reading and Watching

Three books are in the bag at the moment.
  • Being Mortal by Atul Gawande is about accepting that life is not static and death is always there at the end. This is the thing I have learned through observation; that farms change from week to week and month to month, and in the end winter comes. Individual lives end, whether from hunter's bullet, hawk's talon, or fox's fang, but life is passed on like a baton. Spring comes again. As for death, it is inevitable and all we can do is make it swift and remove as much pain and fright as possible. Are we doing that now when it comes to human health care?  I think not, but read the book.
  • Everything is Bullshit is a collection of essays about things that are "scams".  The first chapter is about diamonds, a topic I have written about before.  See The Business of Diamonds .... and Dogs.  There is also a stand-alone chapter about dogs. I suspect I have written about that as well. We shall see!  I think I know a bit about scams!
  • Mission to Paris is a novel by Alan Furst who writes complex historical spy novels about the see-saw politics, resistance, idealism, and treachery that went on during World War II.  My father got me started on these, and this is a remainder from him.
  • Currently binge-watching:  The Good Wife (Netflix), which is a lot better than the title sounds. I am surprised.
