How Do Dogs Keep Their Feet Warm in Snow?

How do dogs keep their feet warm in snow?  The answer is that that in most dogs, the veins and the arteries in the feet are very close together, so cold blood is reheated before it goes back to the heart, in a kind of "heat exchange" arrangement. Dogs are not unique with this set up. Many other cold-living mammals have a similar arrangement.

  1. Thanks I have often wondered about that. Especially when watching my dog happily splashing through an icy puddle.
