Cats are great, but...no dog? I wouldn't be complete. And those cows aren't going to let you sleep too late, either. I liked this film a lot, but it's incredibly romanticized. Farms have their own schedules. Ask me how I know!
You don't own a cow -- he owns you. At least with a chicken you can kill them all, toss the last dozen eggs in a self-turning incubator, and leave for three weeks. A dariy cow will die if you don't milk it every day. Plus there's mowing, weeding, fencing, etc. But if you are young and do not want vacations and like to work and never want to drive anywhere when gas is $4 a gallon.... farming is for you!
I liked the way it was filmed. He is a bit more disorganized than I am in some ways but not that much different a life style. A milk cow won't die if she's not milked, she'll dry up. I am into fibre art, grow my own dye plants. I have to have dogs to keep me company, run the deer out of the yard, first line of defence and the cats keep mice out of the house. I can see he's getting older (like me) and day to day work is getting harder. But there's nothing like waking up and knowing you are the lord of your land.

ReplyDeleteHe's an artist with 50 acres. Fourteen cows is impressive, but with HORNS? Nah, no thanks. And where is Mrs. Artist?
ReplyDeleteIt's not the hard work that puts me off farming. It's the external market forces one can do nothing about that kills me.
