Expensive Gas? Compared to what?

From The Wall Street Journal comes this note about gas prices, buried in an article about the world's longest cab ride:

So far, Turkey has had the highest prices at the pumps, charging upward of $12 a gallon, he adds, while prices in the U.S. are the lowest.

"Americans don't know how good they have it," he says of gas prices here.

    70% of the pump prices in Turkey are tax. Turkey relies upon this tax since it cannot rely upon income taxes.

    Have a wander over to the other side of the pond, to Britain, say. You'll be paying $8.51 per US gallon for diesel fuel here, and a mere $8 or so for standard gas. The Chancellor here plans to increase the tax on gas over here in August, too; I'll be stocking up on fuel before that time for the inevitable fuel strikes...

    I lived in the UK from 1999-2001, and in Turkey from 2007-present. I remember my first shocker in the UK when I moved there. In the U.S. at that time, I could fill my tank for $22. In the UK, it was $150.

    In Turkey, we have an even smaller car, but it still costs $140 to fill it. Needless to say, we drive less than 2000 miles a year. We really only have it for big grocery trips, and in case our pets (or injured street animals) need to be transported to the vet in an emergency.

    I laugh to see Americans "devastated" by the $3/gallon gas prices. Having traveled all over the world, it is very hard to find a country with lower gas prices than in the U.S., even now. Thanks for bringing this up in your blog.

    You problably have not been in Venezuela , south america,

    Gas there is cheaper thsn water, you could fill up your car with 3$ full tank
