Post Hurricane Mushrooms

The rain from the recent hurricane, combined with the lengthening days, has created the first flush of fall mushrooms, These are Horse Agarics (Agaricus arvensis) and puff balls from one of the fields I hunted today.   The myceleum is always in the soil, but the combination of water pressure and the fear of winter death forces a visible fruiting of the fungus -- the mushroom.

Puffballs are actually quite good to eat provided they are picked young, and they are still white all the way through.

Horse Agarics are a very common mushroom and among the very best mushrooms to put into an omelette.

I could have picked twenty pounds, but I don't actually like mushrooms very much!
