Ah, I see the first blush of green, Happy Spring! Was anyone home today? I saw a fox in broad daylight at a rather unlikely place today, and he looked in fine condition. Do I see two sets of Boomerang slide tags on Mountain? I'm guessing if she loses her locator collar you're hoping it might be returned with ID?

I ended up with two collars on Mountain as she managed to break the strap on her Deben locator when he bounced a cat out of a hole. She then busted the cat up a tree and OUT of the tree (this cat was suicidal) where they rolled a bit before the cat managed to escape up another tree where it stayed put. The miracle was that I found the collar! A bit of repair needed, but I have replaced leathers before -- not a problem. VERY happy to find that lost collar! A small miracle, really. I put the red collar on while she was collarless and I was looking for the lost one. Then I swaped Gideon's Deben to Mountain, as she is always first in to any hole.

Great pics. I see what you meant when you said Gideon had a 'head like an anvil'. Both beautiful dogs to my eyes. When you say cat, did you mean kitty or otherwise. Mine also like cat, no matter what the flavor.

A feral cat -- a dark gray tabby. People dump them in the woods and there they learn to either kill or are killed themselves. Coyotes love feral cats, as do the fox hounds that run on this land at times. If the cat is smart and trees quickly (not all do), it then lives off of songbirds and nestlings as well as mice. The fact that this cat was found underground suggests it was born wild. It will have a short life one way or the other, thanks to distemper and rabies which are endemic in this area. Feral cats are a top rabies carrier. No reason to kill them, as God will sort it out very quickly.

Well, I can see I over-thought the two collars! I'm amazed to hear of feral cats living below ground. Sad about the ugly ends to their short, difficult lives.

Glad you found the collar and didn't have to get a bad case of the sads lol. Pricey little buggers.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started on feral cats. Cat owners are some of the most irresponsible pet owners on the planet, yet they usually not required to get a license for them.
Looks like a good day in the field. Can't wait to get out there again!
