Which Way Did the Hounds Go?
The caption says: "A huntsman asks the terrierman which way the hounds went, during a meet on the Duke of Rutland's land."
Probably was. A lot of photos now and then were and are staged to some degree.
One of my favorite examples is a picture of a "working" border terrier which can be seen here >> http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com/2005/05/thin-portfolio-of-working-border.html. Note that the fellow with an otter in his hand is in a photographer's studio!
The huntsman is riding a very coarse steed to be riding to hounds. Were all the Shire horses in the fields that day?
As for the otter photo, it has to be staged. An otter can easily take out a small dog. You'd have to have a pack of them (as in more than 6) if you ever wanted to take an otter using a dogs!

Of course, that is a different species of otter, but European and North American otters are about the same size.

Of course, European otters are solitary, so the dogs wouldn't have to worry about the otters packing up and making a counter-attack.
My wife would kill me if I went digging dressed in my Sunday best as they seemed to do in the old days.
Love these old photos. Makes the present day terrier all the more valuable if we can see how much ancestry it has. Carpe Diem, for we are all going to be in the archive posts of tomorrow.

Amazing! Those terriers are not running with the hounds as "legend" has it lol.
