I live for small thrills in the woods. On Sunday we busted a female turkey from almost underneath our feet -- it exploded into the hedge, with the dogs chasing after it. We had been loud, so I thought a nest might be nearby, but I did not find it. Just as well.
Coming down the hedge we came across this nice box turtle, with nary a nick in the carapace. Nice! For a little about the decline of box turtles in the Eastern U.S. -- and why I consider this another canary in the coal mine, see >>
