The increasing number of crows in suburban America is a product of increasing numbers of bird feeders.Bird feeders draw and feed squirrels, which in turn end up as roadkill, which in turn end up as food for crows.
Other forms of roadkill further boost crow populations: groundhogs, possums, raccoons, rats, deer and the occasional cat.
Crows can be thought of as a dark harbinger of a growing population of meso-predators and rodents colliding with the top-end predator of modern American wildlife: the automobile.
