Counting the Dead

Great video- the facts don't lie- Russia paid the price for defeating Hitler. I did find a couple of nits to pick out- first- why the reference to Stalin's supposed 1 million Gulag victims? What does that have to do with WW2? German prisoners were in the Gulag- is that what they're talking about? Seemed like a bit of pro-Western propaganda the producers couldn't help but slip in. Second- why talk about the Holocaust as a separate ad hoc event- and so special? I think it's because here in the West we can't accept that killing people as a consequence of an aggressive war (which makes up most civilian victims of wars including WW2) is just as bad as killing people on purpose or as result of ethnic cleansing (most Holocaust victims). Still- the graphics really show what that war was all about- D-Day was relatively minor as was all that action in the Pacific. We won the war but not because we were a square-jawed warrior nation but rather because we were an economic powerhouse- the thing which made us great.

A million people died in Soviet/Russian gulags during WII. Not a point of dispute and a very major death toll of WWII. See > http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2011/mar/10/hitler-vs-stalin-who-killed-more/ There is nothing "supposed" about it.

Your point about the holocaust is mindless. I seriously have no idea what you are talking about. This video is a tally and graphic representation of of ALL war dead, and the holocaust was an enormous part of the war dead. I will not argue the point or give space for holocaust deniers or minimizers. The video is very well and speaks for itself as data sets generally do.

You've got me all wrong- my points about the Holocaust and the Gulag are meant to show the politicization of History- I come from a Finkelstein-type POV. If you go back in time the emphasis on events which happened during the war has changed- especially here in the West- until The Holocaust has become the main casus belli of the war and the consequences of launching an aggressive war (the main charge at Nuremberg) have been minimized. The supposed evil of Stalin is used to minimize and detract from the Soviet contribution to victory. If you study the war dispassionately you can see that most of the horrific consequences were caused by war itself and ethnic cleansing- we avert our eyes from this because we and our allies practice both of these in spades even today...
