A Modern Day Toto ... in Alabama

A modern day Toto was whisked up by mighty winds in Alabama, but eventually crawled home two and a half weeks later with two broken legs.

And what did the owners do?  They say their own lives are so devastated by the same tornado that they cannot properly take care of the disabled dog, so it is parked at the local shelter for now.

Geeeezus, could they please stabilize those fractures???

Oh, and his owners are wankers. Hope his new owners appreciate loyalty.

I think they are not worthy of the dog. If he were My dog, uninjured or not, he would be sleeping in my room/tent/whatever (bed) with legs in proper treatment. The shelter has found a vet for him. I'm sure he would treat the dog on the ACOs say. We're too devastated, indeed.

It's not clear to me that they have abandoned the dog. They may be using the dog "shelter" in the same way that they may be using the church's human "shelter" -- not as a place to abandon family, but as a stepping stone to reconstitution and stability. No way of knowing...

I did some further reading and watched a few news reports, and this one provides a little bit more background.

It sounds like the owners had to "release" him to the shelter so the shelter could take on the expensive task of surgery and rehab. It sounds murky as to what will happen to the dog after he's healed, but the owners may get him back. The shelter stands ready to adopt him out if the owners do not reclaim him.

Kudos to the vet willing to take him on. He's a trooper, and deserves to be rehabbed.
