What Toy Can Survive a Pit Bull?

Peggy M. noted my son's giant Kong Wobbler was a bit worse for wear from his Pit Bull, Lucy.

She writes:

The only dog toy I have found able to withstand Pit Bull jaws is a ball made of openwork. It is hard rubber, but has openings. Do not remember the brand name because it has lasted so long. Originally it came in 3 sizes, one about as big as a tennis ball, one a little bigger than a softball, and one humongous one the size of a soccer ball. That biggest one got eaten real fast because she could get her mouth into the bigger openings. As I am sure you know by now, anything she can get between those back teeth is history. The grapefruit sized one lasted forever because she could not get it between those grinders she has got. The tennis ball sized one lasted pretty well, but eventually she crushed it up enough to get it between the grinders. You might still find these toys available in the hinterlands but they have vanished from the stores here in Maine.

Because I had recently spent 15 minutes looking all the pet toys at PetCo, I knew exactly what toy she was talking about.

That thing can stand up to a Pit Bull?

It's called a "Hol-EE Roller" and it does not look like much.   I had figured it would last 10 seconds with Lucy.

That said, experience beats theory 99.9 percent of the time, so I am going to have my son get one at PetCo and see how it goes.  They are cheap enough, and Lord knows even the toughest Kongs are not lasting too long with this dog.

Anyone else have a suggestion for a dog toy that can survive the jaws of a 50-pound Pit Bull that is (in the immortal words of Gina Spadafori), "as ripped as a gay porn star"?

If so, post them in the comments!

I don't think the Holee Roller is what Peggy was talking about, she says, 'hard rubber'. Holee Roller toys are very flexible, and yes, I think any dog could make short work of one.

My Samantha dog could and did regularly dispatch the black kongs, supposedly the tougher ones. She'd turn them into little bit sized bits and swallow them. I emailed the Kong company and asked their advice, they suggested I buy her a wheelbarrow tire.

I never found a toy she couldn't shred. Sami was one determined dog when it came to chewing things up.

I had one of those balls for my dogs, and I hate to say, but it did not outlast my JRT nor my bulldogge.
I find the kong balls to be the most durable. I've had one for years, through 3 dogs, and it's still around and kicking - much better than the kong itself.
I will say that I had a dobe with crazy pit-bull strength jaws and nothing lasted with her except the kong ball.

We have had pit bulls for 12 years. My current dog is our third pit bull. The toy that lasted the longest was the large or x-large black kong. Red was shred in no time flat.

We had the larger holey balls, but they were short lived. The dogs figured out how to compress them to get them into their mouths and chew them to bits. I was worried about an obstruction after finding the little bits everywhere. Fortunately they passed with no problem.

The really large cuz balls lasted longer than the holey ball once the dogs chewed off their feet.

The chew toy that held up the absolute best was the Galileo bone, however once it's got tooth grooves in it, it's a deadly weapon in the jaws of a dog who likes to chuck their toys around. I had to get stitches after the dog chucked to toy & it connected with my shin bone.

Right now, her favorite toys are the huge Wubba toys with the canvas covering made by Kong. She chews on it and thrashes it around by the tentacles. She eventually gets the larger ball out of the canvas, but it takes awhile.

There is a company that sells weight-bearing bovine leg bones with the marrow freeze dried and stabilized inside. Perfect for pit fighting type dogs. They even come with a wooden breaking stick so that you can get it away from the dog from time to time.

My dogs and I are the victims of the breedist cabal of liability insurers. It seems you and your son have found a solution to this. How do you stay covered when its clear that all actuaries have such a clear agenda?

I agree that the hollee roller isn't what the lady was talking about. They are very soft.

I don't have a pit bull but I do have a crazy destructive mutt. We have ended up going to mostly bones and antlers around the house for legal chewing items and balls too large in diameter for her to bite as play items. We have one that is about 10" in diameter, hard plastic and has a removable plug so we were able to add some sand and BB's to make more interesting noises and she loves it and will push it around the house for hours. We also have a few cuzs without feet, I think they are called other cuzs? (maybe?) They always surprise me how long they last.

FYI, there are also blue kongs that are the same toughness as the black ones but are radio opaque so they show up on xrays just in case a piece gets swallowed and needs to be checked on.

The holy roller is fun to play with-even I like to squish it as a stress reliever. But the Border Collies make short work of it if we don't keep an eye on them.

We've got a harder rubber pink elephant which hasn't been chewed up and it's been around for a year. There's also a yellow chicken, but it's comb and legs are shorter than when we got it.

Make a springpole! Your Jacks will probably like it too. Instructions here: http://workingpitbull.com/

what about a car tire? ;)

Springpoles and treadmills are tools of dogfighters; I'm sure you've read that on the internet, so it must be true. You don't want to be accused of being a dogfighter surely: especially not when you've been such a supporter of pit bulls and pit bull owners on your blog for so long.

Every pit bull has a different definition of toy "survivability" so your son will have to experiment.

The black Kongs are more durable than the red ones. Other possibilities:.

The hard plastic "big balls" or "jolly balls" are great if your son has a fenced yard, which I'm sure he does because no one can be a responsible pit bull owner without one. Or so I've read.

The only thing my pit bull (and my Border Collie, for that matter) have not managed to destroy in fairly short order is the Gaileo bone. However, I once thought I lost a tooth when one of the bastards dropped it on my face while I was sleeping. Not a pleasant way to wake up.

If you want to tire the dogs out and give them a good workout, go for a spring pole or flirt pole. They LOVE it. Lots of websites show how to make them online and no, they're not just for dog fighters.

Check out Marrowbones. You can buy them off Amazon. Get the largest size - they're essentially nylabones with stinky rawhide in the middle.

Normally I would not allow my dogs to eat the kind of concoction that makes up the center of this toy (my pups are chemical free whenever possible) even after months of chewing I would estimate that my three dogs have maybe split a teaspoon of filling among them. That's how durable these toys are.

The filling just serves to make them attractive.

A warning about the Gallileo - while it is definitely the hardest toy on the market, lots of dogs have little to no interest in them, and I have broken ceramic tile in my kitchen and a chunk out of my hardwood in the living room from these toys being dropped. We don't use them any more. ;O)

I should note that my middle girl who is all of 40lbs soaking wet can polish the largest black kong in under a half hour.

Marrowbones have a life of about six months - and cost a fraction of the price.
